The mind is a tricky place isn’t it?! Especially when you work for yourself and at home by yourself like we do. You can get stuck in spin cycles and say the worst things to yourself. Yet as a faith-focused woman, that’s not what God wants for you! He wants you focused on His best for you and your business.
The following are my favorite Christian based mantras that I say to myself when my mind gets funky!
1. God did not bring me this far to only bring me this far
This mantra is something Bill and I breathed when me moved from Minneapolis, MN to Austin, TX. We felt very strongly that the Lord had called us to sell our home and move across the country. I received the conviction to sell the house, Bill received the conviction to move to Austin.
I would love to tell you that the road getting here was easy, but of course it wasn’t! There was a first offer that fell through, a potential costly inspection, and an issue on the day of closing, just to name a few. Every time something bad happened Bill or I would say “God did not bring us this far, to only bring us this far.”
You know what that did for us?
Brought us massive loads of peace.
We firmly believed God had called us to this move and because He called us to it He wasn’t going to leave us with a disaster. No, He was going to do what He does– lead us to victory. Our only job was to lean into Him and rely on Him.
The same is true for your business. God has called you to this business. He has called you to serve the women you are serving. Is it going to be easy? Heck no! Did Jesus promise us that life would be easy? Nope, He said “In this world you will have trouble, but take heart, I have overcome the world.” John 16:33 NLT
Man, doesn’t that bring you peace? It does me!
When it gets tough, repeat this mantra: God did not bring me this far to only bring me this far.
2. God’s got this for me. He holds my right hand
When I was going through a particularly rough part of my life living in deep depression, I came upon this Scripture: “For I am the Lord your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you.” Isaiah 41:13 NIV I immediately felt a warmth cover me and for the first time in months I didn’t feel alone.
I think of this Scripture often. When I am feeling scared in my business. When I am unsure of the next move to make. When I worry about what people will think or say about me. I remind myself that I am not alone. That Jesus is here and not only is He here, He is holding my right hand. It’s a reminder that God’s got this for me. He will take care of me, He will be there for me, He will provide for me.
When it gets lonely or hard, repeat this mantra: God’s got this and He’s holding my right hand.
3. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me
Oh this is a good, good one for me– I hope it is for you too! One of my favorite things about being a Christian wife, mother, and business owner is that I don’t have to rely on my own strength to do things. Praise Jesus and Hallelujah!
Why is this such a big deal for me?
Well for most of my life before I was a true believer, I relied on me, myself, and I. I have an inner strength that is a gift from God– but I never saw it that way until I became a believer. I believed that I had to do it all myself. I had to figure it all out myself. And that no one could figure out my wife-ing, mothering, and business owning, better than me. I could do it all and didn’t need help from anyone– not even God.
Oooo eee– you can guess how well that went right?!
When you think you can do it all and don’t have to rely on the Lord for your strength ugly things creep in. Things like ego and arrogance and pride. On the flip side other things can come in like imposter syndrome, lack of confidence, and not feeling good enough.
No thank you to all of it!
I want to give glory where glory is due– and that is upon the Lord. I want everything I do to be through His strength, not my own. It makes it so much easier when I get scared or if my ego gets big that I can shut it down and say “Nope, I can do ALL things through Christ who strengthens me.”
When you are scared or find yourself having an inflated ego, repeat this mantra: I can do ALL things through Christ who strengthens me.
4. I will take this thought captive and make it obedient to Jesus.
Mindset is not a new thing or a thing that is only for those that practice in the “New Age” philosophies. Mindset is very much centered in the Bible and this is proof with this Scripture: “casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ,” 2 Corinthians 10:5 NKJV
God knew that our minds would be a battlefield. In fact in Corinthians it says that while we live in the world, we don’t wage war as the world does. Our battles are supernatural and we have the divine power to break these strongholds. This is one of the reasons we are to pray without ceasing. Prayer is one of our supernatural gifts given to us by God!
Now how does this work in real life? How does this work when you are feeling like crap about your business? When you think you will never get another client or make another sale?
You stop, you take that negative thought captive, and you submit it to Jesus. I like to imagine laying the thought at Jesus’ feet and then examining it against what He says is true about me.
Thoughts like: “I will never get another client” submitted to Jesus looks like this: Nope not true! God tells me through His word that He has plans for me and they include hope, a future, and for me to prosper. Jeremiah 29:11.
When you have that ugly thought come up, you must take it captive and submit it to the will of God. What does God say about YOU. Your truth is in there– not the lie that you are telling yourself.
When the negative thoughts start to pop up, (and they will every day!), say this mantra: I will take this thought captive and submit it to Jesus to see what is true.
5. I am blessed to be a blessing
Oooo money, money, money. We want it, we need it, we feel ashamed asking for it.
True?
True.
Now a whole book could be written about this subject. But let’s break it down into a few basic things. Our negative feelings around money come from:
- Our family of origin and the way money was perceived growing up.
- That it’s not polite to ask for money.
- That as Christian women, we are not to ask for money or want money.
The Bible talks about money a ton. In the Bible, you will find exactly what you are supposed to do and think about money. Never does it say that money itself is evil. What does it say is evil? The LOVE of money. Big difference. One of my favorite verses is that we cannot serve two masters; money and God. Matthew 6:24
God wants us to make money! He wants us to be able to contribute to our family’s finances. He wants us to be good stewards of what He provides. He wants us to earn money for the hard work we do.
One of my favorite things to say is “I am blessed to be a blessing.” God has given me the gift of being able to work and provide income not only to meet our family’s needs, but to meet the needs of the world! There are people out there that can’t buy food or clothes. They don’t have the ability to care for themselves. We do. We are blessed to be a blessing so we can show Christ’s love and help those less fortunate.
When making money feels icky to you, stop making it about you! Think about who you could bless with an extra $500 or $1,000 or $10,000! Doesn’t that make earning loads of money sound more fun?!
Repeat this mantra when you are struggling with making money: I am blessed to be a blessing. I will make more so I can give more.
6. I can ask and I will receive
There’s something I find interesting about Christian women. We have no problem praying for others, we have no problem praying for day-to-day issues, but we rarely pray over our businesses.
My hunch tells me it goes back to our feelings around money. That praying about your business means you are asking for money and we can’t do that.
I also think we forget to invite God into our businesses. We like keeping God in the “Sunday box.” Or we can only pray around topics like our kids, our husbands, and our friends.
God wants to be involved in every area of your life including your business! He wants your latest course launch to go well. He wants you to change the life of your coaching client. All you have to do is ask Him and He will come alongside you in your business.
He wants you to ask for what you want. We need to believe that when we ask, we will receive it. We have to have faith that it will happen. God doesn’t want us to meekly ask. He wants us to come before Him with big, bold prayers. Ask Him for that next big launch to go well so you can be a blessing to others. Ask Him, believe what He tells you is true, and then go for it!
When I decided that I was going to launch a group membership community, I brought God in from day one. I created the Facebook group two months in advance of launching. Everyday I prayed over the women coming in. I prayed that I could help them. I prayed that they would let me help them.
Then as I set the launch date, I prayed and I asked God “Please help me to get 25 women into my brand new community. I know that if I have 25 I can make a real go of this.” But there was a secret that I didn’t tell anyone– but God knew. Deep, deep down, I wanted 30 women into my group.
The launch was an absolute whirlwind! Emails and webinars and Facebook Lives all over the place. The day after the cart closed, I added up how many women I had added to my new membership.
Any guesses?
Yup. 30!
Not the 25 I boldly asked for, but the 30 that God knew deep down I really wanted. Isn’t it the best when God shows up for your biggest dreams?!
When you get scared or are ready to see things happening in your business, say this mantra: God I know I can ask and the door will be opened. I ask for X and I believe in faith it will happen for me!
7. What I focus on grows
Man oh man do I say this one a ton. I say it to myself, to my clients, to Bill, to my kids. I say it so much the kids start to groan and say “I know, I know. What I focus on grows.”
God has given us the divine power to transform our minds. “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” Romans 12:2
Isn’t that amazing?! He doesn’t give that power to birds or fish or dogs. He gives that to us, the very beings that He made like His Son.
Powerful right?!
I talk to my kids often about the story they tell themselves. Are you telling yourself you are smart and can figure out this math problem? Or are you telling yourself you suck at math and will never figure it out.
Because both are true. You decide the narrative and the outcome. If you decide you can figure out the math problem, you will. If you decide you can’t figure out the math problem, you won’t.
What you focus on grows.
God wants us to focus on what is true and right and good. He wants us not to be anxious but to come to Him with everything. He wants us to renew our minds and live in a state of thanksgiving and joy.
This is possible when you decide the story you tell yourself. Tell your brain that you will add 1,000 women to your email list. That by this time next year, you will quit that 8-5 that is killing you. That you will make more money in this business than you ever did at your day job. Focus on the good and more of the good will show up!
When it gets hard, repeat this mantra: I am the author of my story. I will focus on the good and renew my mind. What I focus on grows!
8. The joy of the Lord is my strength
I love that there is a song for this mantra. The joy of the Lord is my strength! Whether I am feeling frustrated or happy, I walk around singing the chorus to this song.
As it says in Nehemiah 8:10 NLT: …“Go and celebrate with a feast of rich foods and sweet drinks, and share gifts of food with people who have nothing prepared. This is a sacred day before our Lord. Don’t be dejected and sad, for the joy of the Lord is your strength!”
This Scripture reminds me that we are to rejoice all the time– not just when things are good. Next it reminds me that the Lord is my strength. I am not alone in this. God is here, I don’t have to do this alone, and I can rejoice!
Nothing heals a heart that is hurting over a lackluster launch or a bad email from a client, like singing the Lord’s praises. This song is a good reminder that even though it looks bad now, God’s got you. That’s how He is.
When you are feeling sad or happy, SING this mantra: The joy of the Lord is my strength!
9. I believe God wants me to succeed in my business
God called you to your business for a reason. This was His plan for you. We often think that it’s about us wanting to start this business to make more money and be free from the daily grind. Sure, God wants that for you too but He has a greater purpose. We are here to help heal the Kingdom of God and yup even your business is a helper when it comes to that mission.
Goosebumps anyone?!
I look at it in my own business. God called me to help women grow successful online businesses. Woo hoo! How fun for me!
But over the last three years, I have realized He wants me to do much more than that. That it’s only one piece of the puzzle.
He wants me to invite Him into the conversation. He knows there is a lot of ugly, dark stuff in the online business world. Greed, imposter syndrome, ego, lack of confidence. When we start to feel these things, we can be led down some slippery slopes like “manifestation” or “universe type talking.” God made me realize that the online business world is good, but it needs light– His light!
When I started to realize His purpose for my business, it stopped being about me. It started being about how can I serve you, serve God, and bring Him glory. Let me tell you, that has been a lot of fun!
Now, maybe your business isn’t tied directly to preaching on God and His plans. That doesn’t mean your business doesn’t serve a purpose for His Kingdom. Maybe you are in marketing and you are bringing glory to God by helping your client’s business get off the ground. Maybe He has called you to be a weight loss coach that helps women struggling to get healthy.
You are helping on the mission to restore the Kingdom. You are helping women get healthy. You are helping women grow businesses. You are serving people and that is exactly what Jesus wants you to do.
When business gets hard and you aren’t sure you can keep going, say this mantra: “I know God wants my business to succeed. He brought me to it, He will see me through it.”
10. Thank you Jesus
I walk around saying “Thank you Jesus” a lot. Thank you Jesus for my new client. Thank you Jesus for my kids going to school nicely. Thank you Jesus for that new opt-in offer idea. Heck I even say thank you Jesus when I find a good parking spot!
Gratitude is amazing. It is good for the soul and it reminds us of the good things God has done in our lives– even a good parking spot. 😉
But there are two more ways I use thank you Jesus in my business that has completely changed how I see things.
I thank Him for the bad and for what’s to come.
For example, when I have a client that picks another coach, I say “Thank you Jesus for the opportunity to talk with her.” Or “Thank you Jesus that she didn’t pick me because we weren’t the right fit and you knew it.” God loves when we thank Him in the bad times. It shows our faithfulness.
Another thing I like to do is something called “Gratitude+.” In this way I like to thank God for the blessings that He is bringing to my business. “Thank you Jesus for the 1,000 women you are bringing me to serve.” “Thank you Jesus for the 25 new women you are bringing into The Society in October.” I stand in faith that I know God wants my business to succeed and He has the right people on the way to make that happen.
When you are happy, down, or expectant, say this mantra: Thank you Jesus!
11. God your will be done, not mine
Oh this mantra took me a long time to get. A long time. Yes you can ask and the door will be opened, but always first seek God’s will. I ask God for what I want and always add, “your will be done Lord, not mine.”
This is such a great reminder to me that God’s plans for my life are much greater than my own! Maybe I am asking too small and God wants to do something bigger!
That was certainly the case when I opened The Society two years ago. God wanted more than my 25 women. He wanted me to serve the 30 women I really wanted. His will, His plans were much bigger than my own.
When was a time when God’s plans and His will was bigger than what you ever envisioned? We all have those moments we can look back on and go “Wow God. I would have never thought of that on my own.”
This is why I always come back to “let Your will be done.” We want to do God’s work, but under His guidance and advice.
Besides, I’ve tried to do it my way and guess what? It never works out like I want it too. When I surrender and give my business over to God, I put Him in control of it and let me tell you, there is so much peace in that!
All the time, use this mantra: Your will Lord, not mine be done in this business.”
My hope is that these faith based mantras become a part of the daily words you say to yourself. I hope that they help you succeed in your business. Even more so I hope that they bring you closer to Jesus.
